چکیده

The hydrogen permeance of several 0.1 mm thick Pd–Cu alloy foils (80 wt.% Pd–20 wt.% Cu, 60 wt.% Pd–40 wt.% Cu and 53 wt.% Pd–47 wt.% Cu) was evaluated using transient flux measurements at temperatures ranging from 603 to 1123 K and pressures up to 620 kPa both in the presence and absence of 1000 ppm H2S. Sulfur resistance, as evidenced by no significant change in permeance, was correlated with the temperatures associated with the face-centered-cubic crystalline structure for the alloys in this study. The permeance of the body-centered cubic phase, however, was up to two orders of magnitude lower when exposed to H2S. A smooth transition from sulfur poisoning to sulfur resistance with increasing temperature was correlated with the alloy transition from a body-centered-cubic structure to a face-centered-cubic structure. © 2004 Elsevier B.V. Palladium-copper Alloy Membrane Performance under Continuous H2s Exposure

Palladium-copper alloys continue to be of interest for hydrogen membrane applications because of their high catalytic activity for hydrogen dissociation, high hydrogen permeability, robustness, and degradation resistance in the presence of sulfur-containing compounds. This sulfur tolerance makes these alloys attractive for membrane applications where sulfur compounds are likely to be present, s...

Hydrogen permeance of palladium–copper alloy membranes over a wide range of temperatures and pressures

The permeance of Pd–Cu alloys containing 40, 53, 60, and 80 wt.% Pd has been determined over the 623–1173 K temperature range for H2 partial pressure differences as great as 2.6 MPa. Pure palladium and copper membranes were also evaluated. The Pd–Cu alloys exhibited predictable permeances that reflected the crystalline phase structures as shown in the binary phase diagram. Under conditions of f...

Development of Palladium-Alloy Membranes for Hydrogen Separation and Purification

This paper summarizes R&D activities and progress at NORAM Engineering and the University of British Columbia (UBC) on preparation and testing of thin palladium-based membranes and their applications. Most of these activities were carried out internally at NORAM, some jointly with UBC and their spin-off company, Membrane Reactor Technology (MRT) through a wide range of projects. Key results out...

Prediction of hydrogen flux through sulfur-tolerant binary alloy membranes.

Metal membranes play a vital role in hydrogen purification. Defect-free membranes can exhibit effectively infinite selectivity but must also provide high fluxes, resistance to poisoning, long operational lifetimes, and low cost. Alloying offers one route to improve on membranes based on pure metals such as palladium. We show how ab initio calculations and coarse-grained modeling can accurately ...

Nanostructured Palladium-Doped Silica Membrane Layer Synthesis for Hydrogen Separation: Effect of Activated Sublayers

Palladium doped silica membranes were synthesized by the sol-gel method using two different procedures. The first palladium-doped silica membrane (M1) was synthesized with a coating of four layers of silica-palladium sol. The second membrane (M2) was synthesized with a coating of two silica layers followed by a coating of two silica-palladium layers. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) proved th...
